Ranunculus (Corms)
Petal upon petal, like silk folded into a flower.
Ranunculus are beloved for their densely layered, paper-thin petals that form lush, rose-like blooms. Each flower opens slowly, revealing concentric rings of colour — from soft blush and buttercream to coral, wine, and bold jewel tones.
They carry an old-world elegance yet feel fresh and modern in bouquets. Whether grown for cutting or admired in the garden, ranunculus bring refined beauty to the cool seasons.
Height: 12–24 inches
Bloom time: Spring to early summer
Best for: Cut gardens, borders, containers
Vase life: 7–12 days
A florist’s favourite and a gardener’s treasure.
How to Grow Ranunculus
Cool roots. Bright light. Patience rewarded.
🌱 When to Plant
Ranunculus prefer cool growing conditions.
In colder climates (like Alberta):
• Plant outdoors in early spring once soil is workable
• Or start in a cool greenhouse for earlier blooms
In mild climates, they can be planted in fall for spring flowering.
🌰 Preparing the Corms
Ranunculus corms resemble little dried octopus feet.
• Soak in room-temperature water for 3–4 hours before planting
• Do not oversoak
• For best results, pre-sprout in moist soil in a cool space (optional but helpful)
🌿 Planting
• Plant 1–2 inches deep
• Claws facing downward
• Space 4–6 inches apart
☀️ Light & Soil
• Full sun preferred
• Well-draining, rich soil
• Amend with compost before planting
Drainage is essential — they do not tolerate soggy soil.
💧 Watering
• Keep evenly moist during growth
• Avoid waterlogging
• Reduce watering as foliage yellows after flowering
🌸 Blooming
Expect blooms approximately 90 days after planting. Cooler growing temperatures produce stronger stems and more vibrant flowers.
🧺 After Flowering
• Allow foliage to die back naturally
• In cold climates, lift and store corms in a cool, dry place
• In very well-drained beds, some gardeners experiment with overwintering, though success varies
Why Grow Ranunculus?
• Exceptional cut flower quality
• Long vase life
• Wide colour range
• High bloom count per corm
They feel like something from a Dutch still-life painting — luminous, layered, and unforgettable.
