Botanical name: Cleisostoma fuerstenberianum
Common name: No widely recognized common name; often referred to simply by its botanical name.
Kingdom: Plantae
Family: Orchidaceae
Genus: Cleisostoma
Origin: Southeast Asia, particularly found in countries like Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam; typically grows as an epiphyte in lowland to montane forests.
Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. It thrives under filtered sunlight, making it ideal for placement near east or south-facing windows with a sheer curtain. Avoid direct midday sun, which can scorch the leaves. Artificial grow lights can also be used to supplement natural light, especially in low-light indoor settings.
Water:
As an epiphytic orchid, Cleisostoma fuerstenberianum requires regular watering, but the roots should not sit in water. Water 2–3 times per week during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the roots to dry slightly between waterings. In cooler months, reduce watering to once a week or less, depending on humidity levels and temperature. Mist the plant regularly in dry conditions to maintain humidity.
Fertilizer:
Use a balanced orchid fertilizer (20-20-20) diluted to half strength every 2 weeks during the growing season. In autumn and winter, reduce feeding to once a month or pause entirely if the plant enters dormancy. For optimal health, alternate with a bloom-boosting fertilizer (higher in phosphorus) when flower spikes are forming.
