Hyacinths are beloved for their dense spires of star-shaped flowers and unmistakable sweet fragrance. Each sturdy stem is covered in tiny blooms, creating a lush column of colour in shades of blush pink, lavender, violet, creamy white, soft yellow, and deep blue.

A classic spring bulb with an old-world garden feel, hyacinths are beautiful planted along pathways, tucked into garden beds, or grown in pots where their fragrance can be enjoyed up close.

How to Grow Hyacinths

Plant in fall. Wait through winter. Enjoy the magic in spring.

🌱 When to Plant

Hyacinth bulbs need a cold period to produce their spring flowers.

In colder climates like Alberta:

• Plant outdoors in fall before the ground freezes
• Aim for approximately 6 weeks before the soil freezes solid
• Bulbs will remain dormant through winter and emerge in spring

🌷 Planting

• Plant approximately 4–6 inches deep
• Place the pointed end facing upward
• Space bulbs 4–6 inches apart
• Plant individually or cluster together for a fuller display

For the most beautiful effect, plant hyacinths in small groups rather than single bulbs scattered throughout the garden.

☀️ Light & Soil

• Full sun to partial shade
• Loose, well-draining soil
• Amend heavy soil with compost or organic matter

Good drainage is especially important. Bulbs sitting in wet soil are more likely to rot.

💧 Watering

• Water thoroughly after planting
• Spring moisture is usually sufficient once established
• Water during particularly dry periods
• Avoid consistently soggy soil

🌸 Blooming

Hyacinths bloom in early to mid-spring, producing wonderfully fragrant flower spikes.

Cool spring temperatures help the flowers last longer.

🧺 After Flowering

• Remove the spent flower stalk if desired
• Leave the green foliage in place
• Allow leaves to yellow and die back naturally
• The foliage feeds the bulb and stores energy for the following spring

Once the leaves have completely yellowed, they can be removed.

Hyacinths can return for several years, although flower spikes may become slightly smaller and more natural-looking over time.
