Available in nearly every shade imaginable — from soft blush and buttery cream to fiery coral, plum, and jewel-toned magenta — gladiolus make a statement wherever they grow.

Architectural, expressive, and endlessly cheerful.
How to Grow Gladiola
Warm soil and full sun bring out their best.
🌱 When to Plant
Plant after all danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed to at least 10°C (50°F).
In Alberta, this is typically late May to early June.
For extended bloom, plant in succession every 2 weeks for a longer harvest window.
🌰 Planting
• Plant 4–6 inches deep
• Space 6–8 inches apart
• Pointed side facing up
Planting deeper helps stabilize tall stems.
☀️ Light & Soil
• Full sun (6–8+ hours daily)
• Well-draining soil
• Amend with compost before planting
They do not tolerate soggy soil.
💧 Watering
• Water regularly during active growth
• Keep evenly moist but not waterlogged
• Mulch to retain moisture
🌸 Support
Taller varieties may require staking, especially in windy areas.
✂️ Harvesting
Cut when the bottom 1–2 flowers on the spike begin to open. Remaining buds will continue opening in the vase.
🍂 End of Season (Cold Climates)
In colder regions like Alberta:
• After foliage yellows or first light frost, dig corms
• Allow to dry for several days
• Remove old corm and roots
• Store in a cool (4–10°C), dry place over winter
• Replant the following spring
Why Grow Gladiola?
