Dahlia Tubers
Late-summer abundance in bloom.
Dahlias are the queens of the cutting garden — producing armfuls of blooms from midsummer until the first frost. From delicate waterlily forms to dramatic dinnerplate varieties, their intricate petals and wide colour range make them one of the most rewarding flowers to grow.
Each tuber holds the promise of a full plant, branching generously and producing dozens of blooms through the season. Colours range from soft blush and buttercream to bold coral, burgundy, plum, and near-black.
Height: 12–48+ inches (variety dependent)
Bloom time: Mid-summer to frost
Best for: Cut flowers, borders, statement containers
Vase life: 5–7 days
A single tuber becomes a season-long harvest.
How to Grow Dahlia Tubers
Warm soil. Strong sun. Generous reward.
🌱 When to Plant
Plant after all danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed to at least 10°C (50°F).
In Alberta, this is typically late May to early June.
You can pre-sprout tubers indoors 4–6 weeks earlier for earlier blooms.
🌿 Planting
• Plant 4–6 inches deep
• Lay tuber horizontally with the “eye” facing upward
• Space 12–24 inches apart depending on mature size
Do not water heavily until sprouts appear.
☀️ Light & Soil
• Full sun (6–8+ hours daily)
• Rich, well-draining soil
• Amend with compost before planting
They dislike soggy conditions but appreciate fertile soil.
💧 Watering
• Begin regular watering once growth is established
• Keep evenly moist but not waterlogged
• Mulch to help retain moisture
🌸 Pinching & Support
• Pinch growing tip when plant reaches 12–16 inches tall to encourage branching
• Taller varieties will need staking or support
🧺 Harvesting
Cut blooms when fully open and in the cool of morning or evening. The more you cut, the more they produce.
🍂 End of Season (Cold Climates)
In colder regions:
• After first light frost blackens foliage, cut stems back
• Carefully lift tubers
• Allow to dry
• Store in a cool (4–10°C), dry place over winter
• Divide in spring if desired
Why Grow Dahlias?
• Continuous blooms until frost
• Incredible variety of forms and colours
• Highly productive for cut flowers
• Excellent tuber multiplication year after year
They are the ultimate late-season showstopper — generous, dramatic, and endlessly collectible.
