Potato Seed | Yukon Gold Organic 2kg
The golden standard of all-purpose potatoes.
Yukon Gold potatoes are beloved for their smooth, thin golden skin and rich yellow flesh. Naturally buttery in flavour and creamy in texture, they strike the perfect balance between waxy and starchy — making them incredibly versatile in the kitchen.
They roast with crisp edges and custard-soft centres, mash into velvety clouds without much added cream, and hold their shape beautifully in soups and gratins.
Texture: Creamy, medium starch
Flavour: Buttery, slightly sweet, rich
Best for: Roasting, mashing, soups, gratins, boiling
A true kitchen workhorse with a refined flavour — ideal for everyday cooking and special dinners alike.
How to Grow Yukon Gold Potatoes
Reliable, early, and generous — Yukon Gold is a favourite for home gardeners and small farms alike.
🌱 Planting Time
Plant in early spring once soil reaches 7–10°C (45–50°F). In Alberta climates, this is typically late April to mid-May, depending on soil warmth.
🥔 Preparing Seed Potatoes
• Cut large seed potatoes into pieces with 2–3 eyes each
• Allow cut surfaces to cure 24–48 hours before planting
• Small seed potatoes can be planted whole
🌾 Soil & Location
• Full sun (6–8+ hours daily)
• Loose, well-draining soil
• Slightly acidic soil preferred (pH 5.0–6.5)
• Avoid planting after tomatoes, peppers, or eggplants
In heavier prairie soils, amend with compost to improve structure and drainage.
📏 Spacing & Depth
• Plant 3–4 inches deep
• Space 10–12 inches apart
• Rows 24–30 inches apart
Hill soil up around plants when they reach 6–8 inches tall. Repeat once or twice to protect developing tubers from light exposure.
💧 Watering
• Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged
• Consistency prevents splitting and hollow centres
• Reduce watering as plants begin to yellow before harvest
🌿 Growing Time
Yukon Gold is an early to mid-season variety, maturing in approximately 70–90 days — earlier than Russets.
🧺 Harvest
• For “new potatoes,” harvest early when plants are still green
• For storage, wait until foliage dies back
• Cure 7–10 days in a cool, dark place before storing
Store in a cool (4–7°C), dark, well-ventilated area.
Why Grow Yukon Gold?
• Earlier harvest than Russets
• Excellent flavour straight from the garden
• Reliable in cooler northern climates
• Versatile culinary use
A golden harvest that bridges summer abundance and autumn storage beautifully.
