Black Magic Colocasia (Corm)
A dramatic, velvety statement plant for bold gardens and moody containers.
Black Magic Colocasia (often called Black Elephant Ear) produces enormous, heart-shaped leaves in the deepest smoky-purple to near-black tone. In full summer growth, the foliage can reach 3–5 feet tall, creating instant tropical architecture.
The leaves are matte, almost velvet in appearance, and sway beautifully in warm breezes — striking against lime greens, soft florals, or pale stone.
Light: Full sun to part shade
Height: 3–5 ft
Best for: Statement containers, tropical beds, water-feature plantings
It’s bold. It’s sculptural. It’s unapologetically dramatic.
How to Grow Black Magic Colocasia Corm
Warmth + moisture = magic.
🌱 Planting Time
Plant outdoors once soil temperatures are consistently above 15–18°C (60–65°F).
In Alberta, this is typically late May to early June.
You can start corms indoors 4–6 weeks earlier for a head start.
🌰 Planting the Corm
• Plant 2–4 inches deep
• Position with the growing point facing upward
• Space 18–24 inches apart
In containers, use a large pot (minimum 14–16” wide) to allow room for growth.
🌿 Soil & Location
• Rich, moisture-retentive soil
• Full sun produces the darkest foliage
• Part shade is tolerated
Unlike many tropicals, colocasia loves consistent moisture and can even tolerate wet soil conditions.
💧 Watering
• Keep soil consistently moist
• Do not allow to dry out
• Thrives near ponds or in rain gardens
The darker the leaf, the thirstier the plant — especially in hot summer sun.
🌡 Temperature
True tropical. Growth explodes in heat.
Below 10°C (50°F), growth slows significantly.
🍂 End of Season Care (Cold Climates)
In cooler regions like Alberta:
• Dig corms before first frost
• Allow to dry for several days
• Store in a cool (10–15°C), dry location over winter
• Replant in spring
Alternatively, grow as a bold seasonal annual.
Why Grow Black Magic?
• Massive architectural foliage
