Orchids | Catteya cernua

Botanical name: Cattleya cernua

Common name: Nodding Cattleya, Sophronitis cernua (syn.)

Kingdom: Plantae

Family: Orchidaceae

Genus: Cattleya

Origin: Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, northern Argentina

Light:

Cattleya cernua thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct morning sunlight but should be protected from the harsh midday sun, especially in warmer climates. If grown indoors, place near an east- or west-facing window with filtered light. Too little light may inhibit flowering, while too much may scorch the leaves.

Water:

This species prefers consistent moisture but must not sit in water. Water thoroughly when the potting medium is nearly dry. During the growing season (spring through early autumn), water more frequently. In winter, reduce watering slightly, allowing the medium to dry a bit more between waterings. Use distilled or rainwater when possible to avoid mineral build-up.

Fertilizer:

Feed Cattleya cernua with a balanced orchid fertilizer (20-20-20 or similar) diluted to quarter or half strength every 2–3 weeks during the growing season. In winter, reduce feeding to once a month or suspend entirely if the plant is dormant. Flushing the pot with plain water monthly helps prevent salt accumulation.
